Theodor Werner

Theodor Werner belongs to the one of the most important agents of abstract art in Germany. The works on paper presented here give a small insight into his work in the 1950s, a very productive period for the artist. He found an important impulse for his experimental work in the artists group ZEN, which he joined in 1950, remaining a member until the group’s dissolution in 1955. Characteristic for the whole period of the 1950s and later is the joy in experimenting with new materials and techniques, the devotion to the creating process, following long years of restriction and wartime artistic isolation. The borders between painting and drawing remain fluid. The influence of far eastern calligraphy on his art can be felt both in his miniatures on paper as well as in his full-scale paintings.

Theodor and his wife Woty Werner donated their impressive collection to the Bavarian Staatsgemäldesammlungen under the condition that works from their own estate would be sold on a regular basis. The earnings from these sales are to be used for the purchase of young artists’ works. With the purchase of works on offer here you are therefore actively contributing to the purchasing power of the Staatsgalerie moderner Kunst.
